A Wayside Elementary School student was in stable condition at a hospital, Township of Ocean School District superintendent Kelly Weldon said in a letter to families on Monday, Oct. 28. The child was injured in a two-alarm fire at the Middlebrook at Monmouth apartment complex.

Weldon said the district has counselors in its schools to support students.

"Please join me in keeping this family and all Ocean families impacted by this fire close to our hearts and in our thoughts over the coming weeks," Weldon wrote.

Firefighters were called to the 1400 block of Rustic Drive in Middlebrook at around 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. The child was rescued by a Wanamassa firefighter before being rushed to a hospital.

A GoFundMe page for the affected family had raised more than $6,100 from at least 120 donations as of Tuesday, Oct. 29. The school district was also collecting gift cards for the family and donated cards can be sent to a school's main office by Friday, Nov. 1.

The county prosecutor’s and fire marshal’s offices were helping Ocean Township police in the investigation.

Anyone with information about the fire should call the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office at 800-533-7443 or the Ocean Township Police Department at 732-431-1428.
